The Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul Abbottabad is not just an institute and training center, but it is the place where future leaders and courageous persons of the Pakistan army are born. Its value is like a mother for those who join this prestigious academy.

No other University and College provides such an amazing atmosphere for the mentally and physically growth of a person as that of PMA. This is the training center where a boy of 18 years adopts such unique values that differentiate him from the rest of the youth. We are going to tell you about the cadet life in the PMA in the following article.

Life in PMA Kakul Abbottabad

The life in Kakul gives so many memories to every cadet. These days become the golden days in the life of cadet. Every cadet enjoys as much as he can because after the completion of training from the academy, the real hard life starts for these young officers.

The training is almost same for all the courses. The course are Long course, Graduate course, Technical cadet course, Medical cadet course, Short service regular commission (SSRC) and Short service commission (SSC). There is 2 year training period for Long course and 1 year for Graduate and Technical cadet course. The rest of the courses have 6 month training period at the academy.

1. Free Facilities and Salary

When you are in PMA, you are trained free of cost throughout the 2 years or 1 year or 6 months and you will get salary every month. The cadet salary is nearly 35,000 PKR. Apart from this, mess, education, military training etc everything is free for cadets in the academy.

There are 4 battalions in the academy. Each battalion has 3 companies. So, there are total 16 companies in the whole academy. Each company has a different name. You may consider a company as a hostel. You get a room in the hostel with full facilities and a batman.

2. Discipline Life

This academy is the best place for gaining discipline and etiquette in life. The discipline and etiquette are created in a cadet with every respect whether it is the discipline of time and daily routine or it is the etiquette of eating in a mess hall.

The academy provides complete track of activities to the cadets and the cadets follow the daily routine. This discipline also results in lifetime discipline of this future officer. There is also a parade for creating discipline.

The cadets are called GCs, gentlemen cadet, in the PMA. The GCs are wakened up in the morning at 5:45 a.m in the academy whether it is summer or winter or extreme cold weather conditions, and the academy lights turn off at 11 p.m. The cadets get a fauji hairstyle cut every week in the academy.

3. PT Training

The physical training of cadets is the most attractive thing for every civilian especially for the youth. An 18-year-old boy who had spent his 18 years in his home becomes a leader and physically hard person after bearing PMA training.

The PT training includes 1 mile run for a cadet before the breakfast. Push ups and chin ups are also the necessary part of PT.

4. Pak Army Cadets Military Training

The military training of PMA cadets is divided into 4 terms. The training become harder and harder as the cadet goes from Ist term to 2nd term and from 2nd term to 3rd term. 4th term training is easy as well as tough for the cadets.

4.1. Ist Term Training

The first term includes basic dill and saluting test for the cadets. Besides this, cadets are trained to use small weapons and they are given the knowledge of navigation from the maps and compass. Cadets also do patrolling exercise. The most difficult thing that cadets face is the ragging from the senior cadets.

4.2. 2nd Term Training

In the 2nd term, one of the hardest exercise is "Yarmuk" in which the cadets have to travel 135 km with 25 kg weight on the shoulders in the mountainous area for the 5 consecutive days.

Boxing is another exercise in this term for checking the endurance of the cadets. It also includes map reading exercises, attack on the enemies exercises, self-defense, advanced weapons training, military tactics.

4.3. 3rd Term Training

Assault course becomes the regular exercise for the cadets to perform in the third term. In this term, the cadets also learn the defense and attack exercises.

Apart form this nine mile competition, Panipat exercise and TM raiders are the toughest exercises of this term.

4.4. 4th Term Training

Acid test is among the most difficult exercise for the cadets which is the part of the 4th and the last term. The cadets has to run in the hilly areas of the Kakul to pass this test. The passing criteria for this exercise is 2 hours and 49 minutes.

Another important exercise in this term is the Qiyadat exercise. The basic purpose of this exercise is to provide confidence and training to the cadets in the war environment.

5. Pakistan Army Ladies Cadets Military Training

The girls are inducted into the army through different courses through Lady cadet course (Short service commission) and Short service regular commission. The girls who get short service commission through LCC, go to the PMA for training and the girls who go through SSRC are mostly doctors and their training is in Army Medical Corps Center, Abbottabad.

The training period in PMA for girls is 6 months. The training consists of map reading, weapons reading etc.

The training of ladies is little bit easy as compared to males but they have to pass all physical efficiency tests as that male GCs. The lady cadets run 1 mile in 10 minutes and they also do push ups, sit ups, bar hanging, and assault course during their training. The girls also undergo Qiyadat exercise with the male GCs.

Female cadets also have to do some extra curricular activities. They can choose swimming, shooting, horse riding depending upon their choice. Lady cadets also compete for firing medal and PT medal.

6. Academics Study

The academics training for PMA long course includes study with respect military point of view. There are different types of subjects for cadets to learn. This includes mathematics, political studies, history, and computer.

7. Uniform Elegance

The grace of the Khaki uniform makes an ordinary boy to look like a prince and girl to look like princess. The cadet wears this Khaki uniform with the proud and this dress is also the source of inspiration for many boys and girls who want to join army.

8. Respect of Seniors

To understand the real concept of senior, PMA Kakul is the best place. You will know the real answers about what is a senior? And what a senior can do? The junior cadet learns most things from the senior cadets.

9. Respect of Staff

The cadets are trained by the staff, but the cadets had to give full respect to the staff. The staff is responsible for giving numbers to cadets. These numbers are included when the result is declared.

The staff can punish and shout on the cadets and the cadet has no right for disobeying the staff order. The cadets have to do whatever the staff says. This teaches a cadet how to give respect to the staff which are serving on the non-commissioned ranks.

In the end, when the passing out parade finishes, that staff which trained the Gentlemen cadets during the training salute these new officers. How good and unique relation the PMA creates between the staff and the  cadets.

10. Punishments/Ragra

There are different types of punishments and ragging that cadets face during their stay in the Pakistan military academy. Some civilian people take these punishments so serious and say that cadets are under the brutality of the academy.

The punishments given to cadets are for their welfare. There is always a reason for every punishment. The cadets are mostly punished by their seniors and also by staff. The punishments become difficult to endure in the winters because of the extreme cold weather conditions as there is snow fall in the Kakul academy.

11. Leadership

The confidence level of cadet of the Pakistan army increases during training by performing activities held in Kakul academy Abbottabad. Moreover, the punishments faced by cadet results in the extreme confidence of a cadet.

He becomes the junior leader of the Pakistan army and as he passes out from the academy, this 20 year boy leads a platoon of six soldiers in the army.
